How to Measure Your Dog for a Harness: The Complete Guide
Share
Why the Right Harness Fit Matters
A poorly fitted harness can cause chafing, restrict your dog's movement, or worse — allow them to slip out and escape. Getting the measurements right before you buy is the single most important step to keeping your dog safe and comfortable on every walk.
What You'll Need
- A soft measuring tape (or a piece of string and a ruler)
- Your dog's cooperation — treats help!
- A notepad to record measurements
Step-by-Step: How to Measure Your Dog
1. Chest Girth (Most Important)
Wrap the tape measure around the widest part of your dog's chest, just behind their front legs. This is the most critical measurement for harness fit. Add 2cm for comfort.
2. Neck Girth
Measure around the base of your dog's neck where a collar would sit. Keep two fingers between the tape and your dog's neck to ensure it's not too tight.
3. Back Length
Measure from the base of the neck (where the collar sits) to the base of the tail. This helps determine if a vest-style harness will cover your dog's back properly.
4. Weight
Weigh your dog if possible. Many harness size charts use weight as a guide alongside measurements.
Reading the Size Chart
Once you have your measurements, compare them to the product's size chart. When your dog falls between two sizes, always size up — a slightly larger harness is safer and more comfortable than one that's too snug.
Signs Your Harness Fits Correctly
- You can fit two fingers under any strap
- Your dog can move their legs freely without restriction
- The harness doesn't slide forward over the shoulders
- Your dog shows no signs of discomfort or chafing after a walk
